Cheap and fun: tips and tricks for activities on a student budget
Student and social media reporter Mindy Davies finds the things to do in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast this weekend that won’t empty your wallet. And the bargains are everywhere
Lifeline Clothing Sale
Get the ultimate in hipster jackets, sweet vintage shoes and ’90s get-up. Everything is only $2. You could fully kit out your wardrobe for barely anything and be contributing to charity, so double win.
When: Saturday 27 June: 8am – 5pm and Sunday 28 June: 9am – 4pm
Where: Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, Broadbeach.
All proceeds will help fund the Lifeline 24-Hour 13 11 14 Crisis Support Line, Lifeline Community Recovery program and suicide prevention and bereavement services.
Street Food Markets
On the Gold Coast on Friday and Saturday night from 5pm, get down to Miami Marketta for some awesome street food, market stalls and live music. This weekend The Flumes and Hot Potato Band are playing.
Brisbane students, we have you covered with Eat Street at Hamilton Wharf on Friday and Saturday from 4pm – 10pm.
There is no entry fee, which leaves more money for the irresistible food. Expect to pay between $10 – $20, but it’s worth it. This is one of my favourite ways to spend a Saturday night.
Movies
Australia Fair Cinema has $7.50 movie deals for students and Southbank Brisbane is only $5! What? I know!If you haven’t taken advantage of this yet, start this weekend. In my opinion, it is way too cold to be outside at a BBQ or going on long romantic bike rides. This is the time to get a big bag of popcorn, a hot chocolate and enjoy the latest movies to hit the big screen.
Live Music
There’s loads of live music all over the Gold Coast and Brisbane this week and every other week. And a whole lot of it is free!

If you don’t find a band you already know, maybe it’s a good opportunity to try something new.
