Five Of The Best Study Spots In South Bank
Whoops! You blinked and suddenly semester 1 is coming to an end. Where did those carefree days of early semester go? Your life now feels like a blur of assessment work, exams, stress and that weird shaky feeling you after too much caffeine.
However, spending your days tucked away in the library, with the flickering fluorescent lights is not the only option. Count your lucky stars my fellow students, because we at the Griffith Collective have compiled a healthy list of serene study spaces for you. Almost all of which offer lovely rays of dappled city sunlight. These are the study spots of your dreams without a depressing fluorescent light to be seen.
The Courtyard at the Con
Located in the heart of the Queensland Conservatorium building (SO1) is a pristine oasis of shrubbery, benches and that sweet, sweet glow of dappled sunlight. The space is often mysteriously empty, so you will never have trouble finding a spot to settle in. You may even be lucky enough to be serenaded by a violinist or flautist who is practicing their repertoire out in the open air. If you are unlucky it could be a Tuba student.
The Verandas
Just above the Courtyard at the Con and tucked even further away from prying eyes are the two Conservatorium Verandas. Like the courtyard, these spaces are quiet and calming. A great place to get some serious reading and research done. They are also a popular hangout for guitar majors, so if you want to couple your study with some live classical guitar this is the place for you.
The Rooftop at The QCA
Let’s say you love the idea of the Con Verandas but you want a bit more of a view and a bit less guitar. Perhaps your idea of inspiration is panoramic views of the city… Well just down the road at the Queensland College of the Art there is a secret rooftop study area on top of the Webb Centre (SO2). With great views of the South Bank and the City, it is a great place to get immersed in your study or get some great cityscape pictures for your Instagram and Snapchat. (By the way you can share those cool photos with us by using #griffithuniversity or @Griffithsnaps, thanks!)
The Graduate Centre green
While you are in South Bank looking for a spot to get your study groove on, you will inevitably be drawn towards the South Bank Parklands. South Bank is full of great places where you can sit down on the lawn and just chill. One of the better spots that not many people use is hidden away behind the Griffith Graduate Centre (SO7). A quiet green space that is a perfect place for a little lie down when you are in need of a study break.
The Parklands Walkway
Last but not least, if lazing around in nature isn’t enough to get you into that true Zen-like state of mind that you require, why not go for a leisurely stroll through the South Bank Parklands walkways? They are another hidden gem which the general Southbank population seem to remain unaware of. It surprises me that they are almost always deserted, when they are such a perfect spot to really get stuck into your study, read, relax and even take a power nap. The choice is yours.
So now that you are in the know, you can stop despairing in the dark corners of the library get your focus back with a little help from mother nature…
Happy studying!
