Behind the Unknown Project
Are you on the hunt for an exciting new read? Griffith Enactus have got you covered. Help raise money for refugee children and treat yourself to some downtime by making a purchase! Griffith Enactus organise student-run projects, in a hope to make a difference locally, nationally and internationally. Enactus is a worldwide organisation, operating in 36 countries and over 1700 campuses.
Currently, the team at Griffith Enactus are working in collaboration with Brisbane-based social enterprise, The Unknown Project, who work to connect young people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds with resources and opportunities. The project’s motto is, ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover.’ They collect donated books, and wrap them in brown paper (concealing their identity), and then inscribe three clues on the cover to describe the individual book. These are then sold across multiple locations and at events, for the low price of $5!
Bachelor of Science/Business student, Natalie Durack, is one of the team members currently working on the project, raising much-needed funds to purchase resources and experiences for refugee children at the Multicultural Families Organisation (MFO) in Southport. The Griffith Enactus group are also establishing a program with the MFO called the Leaders of Positive Change, which involves youth ambassadors going into schools to discuss bullying and domestic violence surrounding refugee families.
If you have quality books gathering dust at home, Griffith Enactus are happy to take them off your hands. Books can be dropped off at the Griffith University Gold Coast Library, or simply message Griffith Enactus on Facebook!
If you’ve ever thought about volunteering and you’re a member of the Griffith Honours College, Griffith Enactus is always looking for more volunteers to help with their latest projects. Keep an eye out for Natalie and the team at upcoming events on the Gold Coast Campus, and be sure to follow their Facebook page to find out where they’ll be next! Griffith Mates also offer community volunteering experiences.
