Developing your practical skills while studying, and how Unitemps can help
There are many benefits to gaining practical experience in the field you’re studying. Not only does it prepare you for what working in your chosen field will be like, it also expands your knowledge and skills dramatically to be confident in your abilities. Personally, what I have found from gaining practical experience is that it gives you a much clearer idea of your interests and what you want to focus on within your field.
As I am nearing the end of my degree, I am beginning to feel nervous and pressured about heading out into the “real” world. Throughout my time at Griffith, I tended to focus on my academic studies rather than looking into gaining practical experience related to this. However, nearing the end of my degree I have taken up a few opportunities that have made me realise this is something all students should consider earlier in their studies. Griffith University’s employment service, Unitemps, offers an easy way for students and graduates to connect with potential employers and opportunities.
So, what is Unitemps?
Unitemps is an employment agency based at Griffith University that provides work opportunities to both students and graduates. Unitemps can promote you directly to employers in your field of work, giving you better exposure and the opportunity to pursue your dream career. Additionally, there are many different work opportunities available whether it be casual, temporary, part-time or even a graduate program.
How can you make the most out of Unitemps?
While Unitemps gives you easier access to opportunities, it’s up to you to put the effort in to ensure you take advantage of the best possible opportunities. Firstly, you need to provide at least one professional standard résumé that will get you noticed by employers. You can also upload multiple résumés to suit the different types of work you are looking for. You will also need to be proactive and regularly search online for current job opportunities.
How do you register?
You can register online, all you need to do is create a profile, set up job alerts, upload your résumé and then you’re ready to start applying for vacancies!
My advice for current and future students is to go looking for opportunities; whether it is paid work, internships or a WIL program, go for it! Don’t let the fear of having too many other commitments and not enough time stop you from doing something that can dramatically benefit your career! Take advantage of Unitemps and the other career and employment services Griffith has to offer and start developing your practical skills now. Making the most of your degree by taking every fun, exciting and challenging opportunity you can get is something I would encourage every student to do.
